David A. Townes, MD, MPH, FACEP
Medical Director

Dr. Townes received his medical degree from the University of Massachusetts and completed his internship and residency in emergency medicine at the University of Illinois at Chicago. He is board certified in emergency medicine. He did a fellowship in international emergency medicine and earned his master's degree in public health. He has worked in a variety of wilderness and international settings including Alaska, Antarctica, Costa Rica, Guatemala, Russia, the West Indies, and Yosemite National Park.

He has been a physician volunteer for the National Ski Patrol, the search and rescue team at Yosemite National Park and the Indian Health Service and is a former member of the Board of Directors of the Wilderness Medical Society. He has served as the Medical Director for the Heartland AIDS Ride (2001), the Subaru Primal Quest Expedition Length Adventure Race (2002, 2003, 2004), and the Coastal Challenge (2005, 2006).

He is a frequent speaker and author in the areas of wilderness and expedition medicine. Dr. Townes is currently an Assistant Professor and the Associate Residency Program Director in the Division of Emergency Medicine at the University of Washington School of Medicine in Seattle, Washington.


Kyle McLaughlin, MD, CCFP
Medical Director

Dr. McLaughlin is an Emergency Medicine Physician from Calgary, Alberta, Canada. He received his medical degree from Dalhouse University, completed his residency in family medicine and fellowship in emergency medicine at the University of Calgary. He served as the Medical Director for Basic Nature Adventure Racing (2002-2003), has been a medical team member for the Subaru Primal Quest Expedition Length Adventure Race (2002, 2003) and its Associate Medical Director (2004, 2006). He most recently was a physician for the Lake Louise World Cup (2006) and served as Medical Director for The Coastal Challenge Endurance run in Costa Rica (2007)

He is involved in research and lectures on wilderness and environmental medicine topics. Dr. McLaughlin currently works in the Emergency Department at the University of Calgary and in Banff National Park.


William Webster, MD, FACEP
Medical Director

Dr. Webster received his medical degree from the University of Oklahoma and completed his internship and residency in emergency medicine at the University of Illinois at Chicago. He is board certified in emergency medicine. He has been a medical team member for the Subaru Primal Quest Expedition Length Adventure Race (2002) and its Associate Medical Director (2003, 2004). He is the Medical Director for the Primal Quest Expedition Length Adventure Race (2006).

Dr. Webster is a emergency medicine physician in Northern California.
